50 year old bouganvilla

How far can I cut back a very old bouganvilla? It is climbing a 30 foot tree. I would like to cut it back to about 3 or 4 feet. The stumps are about 8 inches in diameter. If I cut it back that far, there will just be woody stumps and no leaves. Will it come back?
