Yes.....I think so....it kills everything else. Seems a shame though because so many people would like some.

It should do so. The lasagna method seems to work both by smothering (that thick bottom layer of newspaper) and by light suppression (the 12 inches of other stuff layered on top does pretty good at keeping it dark on the bottom).

I've spent a lot of years playing around with lasagna -- long before it had that descriptive and catchy name, the method was called sheet-composting and mostly we did it in great big areas like a whole large garden, but I also did it in small areas - and called it laziness, lol :) Anyhow, the only time I've not had lasagna smother the first time, was during a long battle with a decades-old stand of green-briers - those things had stems that were thicker than a man's thumb, so you know they were determined to keep growing. Up until that time, I had never used more than a quarter-inch of paper on the bottom (and BTW, don't make corragated cardboard the bottom layer, it just doesn't do a good job of smothering)... took me two years to learn that GB's will slither their sprouts through anything less than an inch of paper, but I did win in the end -- or to be correct, lasagna won the battle.

If you use lasagna in an established garden (or to plant in while it's composting) do be careful to start with soaking wet paper and then always keep *all* of the newspaper well covered with mulch. Dry paper will "wick" moisture away from your good plants while moist paper will compost quickly. You may need to irrigate during very long dry spells, although the mulch will delay that need. The other thing to remember is that lasagna turns into lovely soil - and nearby weeds and grasses are going to do their best to get into all that richness; so while lasagna will smother the myrtle (quack grass, thistles, whatever) it's on, any nearby plants will send their roots and runners into your new soil unless you use a barrier or edging to keep the invaders out.
