I like Aucuba japonica, which will develop red berries if there is a male plant nearby.

Illiciums do well in damp shade and bear red, white, pink, or salmon flowers. I have a few varieties if I. floridanum, as well as I. henryi, I. lanceolatum, I. parviflorum, I. mexicanum. Go to Triple Oaks or order from Woodlanders. Various Buxus are shade tolerant, as is Taxus. Consider Rhapidophyllum hystrix for a sheltered partially shaded spot. Camellia oleifera, C. japonica, and C. sasanqua all have hardy varieties and flower when little else is in bloom.
