Black thumb newbie here. Hopefully there's no such thing as a stupid question.

When cutting flowers, is there a common place to make the cut that's true of all flowering plants? Or do you always cut down to the base?

A garden at a house that I'm taking care of has some beautiful blooming lilies and I'd like to cut some for a vase but I don't want to kill the plant.
