Polianthes tuberosa are native to Mexico and are not generally winter hardy here. They are typically sold as a tender, summer flowering bulb (actually a rhizome similar to a calla). They need a long period of warmth to bloom successfully - at least 4 months - so are best started indoors early and moved to a sunny, reflected heat location after frost danger. Container culture is ideal as container soils generally heat up faster and remain warmer than inground soils and they can easily be moved indoors for winter protection.

Commonly sold here, seldom seen in gardens. When I tried them they came up, but slugs kept shearing them off. Didn't act like it was too cold for them, but maybe if they had been left alone long enough for flower spikes to be expected I would've noticed there weren't any being sent up. Leaves never got more than a few inches high each time.

Had the same problem with Peruvian daffodil.

I brought 3 last year from the garden show. I put them in a pot in Feb. The leaves didn't come until Jun. One of them finally got a bud in Aug/Sept. But it did not bloom before the frost and snow destroy them. I don't know if they will come back or not.

I grew some last year; put the bulbs in a couple of pots sitting on the porch (no slugs there!). They bloomed in late fall until frost/snow. I planted them very late and neglected them quite a bit but they did bloom reasonably well in spite of that. I bought the bulbs from Select Seeds. They were the single type. The flower spikes actually last quite a while as cut flowers and the smell is incredible...wafts througout the house.

I think if I'd started them at a reasonable time (spring) indoors and raised them indoors that would be the best option. I am seriously thinking about trying them as houseplants in a sunny spot. Good luck!

Grew 6 bulbs in two pots on deck this year. Got one bloom. Wonderful. Brought it in.

Am going to winter them in the pots in an unheated greenhouse. Hope they make it. Just wondering how much to water during the winter. Any ideas?

Depends on if they root out in fall, like spring bulbs (tulips etc.).

I have some in a 3 gallon pot. They bloomed the first year but not the second. I think they might be overcrowded. I overwintered them in my non-freezing garage. I will have to try dividing them after they die down for the winter. They do smell lovely!
