I can't help you with a plant source, but I help grow about a 1000 plants from seed - which is collected every year from plants grown. It's not difficult if you have a warm space with a lot of light. Seed germination is pretty good if you can find some seed.

Well, I actually do have the seed. I have some in a starter tray, but after 10 days--still no sprouts. I hope the seeds were okay. It's just that I'd like to locate a commercial tobacco farm or nursery where I may order seedlings if these don't grow.

I don't grow tobacco now but have in the past. Tobacco transplants are generally started in 'beds' or float trays in central Kentucky. They can take a while to come up. You can tell the tobacco beds in the spring as they are usually long strips of white after seeding (right about now in some areas). They are covered with fabric row covers and are very easy to spot from a distance. In the case of beds it is rare that every plant is used, the smaller ones are often tilled in after the bed is harvested at planting (May-June usually). If you are only looking for a few plants and know of any farms nearby you might ask the grower if he/she would allow you to salvage a couple of transplants after they are finished planting.

Thanks, Kerry. I was hoping to find a nursery or farm where the little plants are started, so I could order a few flats of starts and have them shipped to me. Unfortunately, I don't live anywhere near tobacco country. The seed I sowed in 2 starter trays is just now sprouting after nearly a month. They are still very tiny, about the size of pencil tips. Not all has sprouted. I'm just afraid I won't have good standing plants by the time my sphinx moths start flying and this is supposed to be food for them.

I am not sure if they have seedlings this year (maybe get on their list for next year), but probably the best selection of rare and heirloom tobacco seed varieties out there is from New Hope Seed Company.

Most of the folks that grow greenhouse or floatbed plants around here sell by the acre. The plants are in styrofoam trays about 18 X 24 inches in size. I suspect that most folks pick up at the grower instead of having them shipped. I know years ago, before blue mold became such a problem people were buying plants out of FL. Don't know how they were being shipped.

Few people around here use plant beds anymore. In fact the only person I know is my brother-in-law. He starts the beds the first part of March. Works the seed bed, mixes the seed with sand to get an even stand, cast's the seed over the area, sprinkles it with a light coating, very light coating of straw and then covers the area with remay. I'm not sure about the length of time for germination but he usually has transplants ready for the field by the middle of May. Good luck finding a source.

Hi, I'm new to this forum, but I'm currently growing tobacco. I purchased seeds from a great site called seedman.com. Just start them in regular trays and some good seed starting mix. Wet it down and put the seed on the top of the soil. Make sure you keep it moist at all times. It takes anywhere from 2 -4 weeks for them to sprout. From that point on, once they get bigger you can put them outside. Weather it be in a bed or a 5 gallon bucket. Hope this helps!

The tobacco out of a ciggy is from the leaves that have been dried and processed.....so, no, they will not grow, as there are no seeds.

Now I've been told that the seeds out of that "wacky backy" stuff will grow....lol...if you know what I mean.

I've just started growing tobacco myself, not even sure if its legal here, but hell, I can buy it in the store, so in my head it is legal. hehe.

Anyho, I started for a month ago, I got a manual with my seeds telling me to put them in a can of some sort, and keep it at 20-25c's and put some plastic sheet on top of it, to keep it moist, and wait til they come up before I sow/expose them to light.

But, as usual, I did it my way, and just planted them in the soil, got up my 400W HPS grolux kit, which is ment for growing, this sweet thing produces upto 60.000 lumens, within a week I could see results, now it has almost gone a month and the plants are huge, like, the biggest ones are 4cms on each leave, others from 2-3cm. The first week I thought I wouldent get any results, but when I looked closely I saw small green thingis =D.

I water them daily / spray them, and I've also gotten up two fans to keep it chilly, and improve the stems.

Anyway, anyone know how many hours tobacco plants usualy should have light, how many hours that are normal?. I thought it was between 16h and 20h, like 18h would be fine, but im not sure, so im asking ;-).

I have had the light on 24/7 for almost 4 weeks now.

Good evening All. Can any one tell me if tobacco can be grown in N.E. Ohio.

You can grow tobacco just about anywhere. I grew up in aurora Ohio and grew all kinds of plants there, if you know what I mean?

IÂm in South Carolina on the border of North Carolina and IÂm planting about 2 to 3 hundred plants of 5 different types just to see what I can do.

As fate would have it, just as I got into this project, I got laid off again. This time for good. Sure put a damper on things.

So instead of plowing up a field, or tilling a huge garden plot, IÂm in the process of digging hundreds of holes in my back acre the size of 5 gallon buckets. I figure the mountain clay soil will act as a pot and IÂm filling the holes with a mixture of store bought potting soil, store bought top soil, humus and a 10% mix of clay from the ground to save on costs.

Oh and I bought 4 bags of sand to add a few cups to each hole to help break up the clay. I burned an entire mobile home I scrapped out and am mixing that stuff into the soil also. (Potash from what I understand)

I just dug 15 holes and almost died, been yr since I did that kind of stuff, but I figure I have 2 weeks until the sprouts come up and another week or so before planting them outside.

So 10 to 15 holes a day should do it for me this 1st yr.

Search around on the net, there is tons of info out there, I have yet to grow my first plants and already I feel like an expert on the subject.

I have read every post on every forum I can find, this is my 3rd time on this thread.

Just research and study, why reinvent the wheel, just copy what others do and you'll be fine. Tobacco is supposed to be an easy plant to grow, except the maintenance, kind of like the funny tobacco.

I just started growing tobacco here in ohio myself. The only problem i had was when my plants got to about an inch or two tall they just curled and died. I may have given them to much light. I buy my tobacco seeds from ebay. They have a very wide of prices and varieties.

I grow pireque tobacco this year in central Louisiana.i started the seed in a bottom watered planter in a bright window in February. Wet soil,place seeds on top press down.covered with Sean wrap until germination and then watered from bottom only.it took a couple of months to get to planting size.must be about five inches high to transplant and by bottom watering only you get a good root length.planted under black plastic in rows and it did super even with high spring rain and very hot summer.i had no insect attacks and never used pesticide and harvested a pint of clean seeds.plastic helped to keep soil loose. And allowed controlled watering.greatresults.aslo grow blue ribbon sweet sugarcane.try climbing spinach for a bountiful healthy crop of delicious and highly nutritious spinach that keeps producing and needed nopesticide.
