I suppose I'll see some when I drive down to the coast on the 19th to do a tree and pruning lecture.

Those are one of my favorite plants to see in wild areas.

The leaves are such a refreshing green.

And the flowers have a refreshing smell, like toothpaste. It's the foliage that stinks.

I've seen some with huge leaves, as they grow, and didn't detect much odor at all.

Maybe its just jouvenile foliage that smells.

Patches get quite skunky as summer drags on. It seems bruising and other damage releases the smell.

I think direct sunlight also contributes to the odor. jwww

Thanks for the fun Spring Report. You know, I've only admired these from afar so didn't know it was the foliage that was the source of the, um, aroma, so thanks for mentioning it.

Looks like I'll be near the coast for two days instead of one. That's double the opportunity to find some skunk cabbage.

They do photograph nicely.

I saw a butterfly or large moth fly by on Saturday.

Had to add a picture of skunk cabbage just for fun.

Aside for any odor, those are a one-of-a-kind plant, and nothing takes their place.

I just saw a nice patch between the Redwood forest and Brookings last Sunday.

Nice photo! They are a lot further along than the ones in my creek. Mine are mostly in the running water, we are at 1000', no sign of blooms yet. Spring is definitely coming even with this mornings dusting of white stuff. jwww
