I love my Japanese Maple in a pot. There are so many to choose from, different colours and growing styles. One of ours is very slow growing and the branch structure is lovely in the winter. It also has lovely autumn colour. We have another one in a pot that is a Coral Bark j. maple. The branches glow coral in the wintertime. Spring, the leaves are chartreuse and a lovely contrast to the branches.

I don't know anything about that particular cultivar, but Western red cedar should do OK in part sun or part shade. I wouldn't try it in full shade. Grows well in containers.

Vine maple and mountain hemlock will also grow well in containers in part shade. (Though the latter is really slow. Definitely start with a 5 gallon plant.) Red stem dogwood is technically a shrub, but it gets tall and will work in containers. The red stems look great during the winter.

Western redbud and incense cedar would do nicely in a sunnier spot.
