I planted one last year, too. Very nice spot free burgundy foliage and red fall hips. I'm not going to prune mine unless it get's too large for my space, then I'll prune after flowering.

They get big. Mine's about 8' tall and around 6 feet across. I do prune each season to a tidier form, generally cutting back the longest shoots and removing the smallest stems. I have it kind of espaliered on an iron trellis, so I typically prune it back to fit the trellis and encourage some denser branching.

They don't get big if you have deer. My deer think these are the very tastiest of all the roses! jwww

Gets big. I never pruned mine. If you do, you just prune it like any other deciduous flowering shrub. Don't prune it like a hybrid tea rose.

They are quite low maintenance. No spray, and just regular garden water/fertilizer.

If wanting foliage only can prune hard each year at end of winter. Otherwise may grow above your head and produce numbers of seedlings. Fruits abundant but apt to blacken quickly in this climate.
