"Kumquats! Where are my kumquats?!". Seems like they even have potted, fruiting specimens in supermarkets and flower shops here. Maybe it's just the wrong time of the year, did you ask at any of the outlets?

Before I posted my original question, I checked with all the local nurseries and grocery stores that sell plants, and they all told me that they never or rarely got in kumquats. Nobody here seems to know much about them, which is why I'm wondering whether I'm wasting my time in trying to grow them from seed.

Gord, I've grown them from seed, but I can't help you as to the quality of the fruit - they don't bear fruit when grown from seed for many years and mine aren't old enough yet.

They do make attractive dark green small shrubby trees for wintering indoors.

From what I've read, kumquat from seed are thought to be inferior because the plants themselves are 'spindly, weaker', 'grafted plants superior in vigor' (I don't see references as to how tasty the fruit)but I don't find that to be true from the appearance of my trees and those I've given as gifts.

And not that it matters, but they aren't classified as citrus :)

That's just the usual oversimplification given for promoting vegetatively propagated stock and named forms. Many superior forms originated as seedlings themselves. Run of the mill plants may or may not be markedly inferior to selected plants, this varies with the kind of plant.

"Citrus" can be used botanically, in reference to the genus Citrus--in which case kumquats are something different--or in reference to the general type of fruit they are--in which case they are citrus.
