Creeping Red Sedum

Hi. I have purchased over 100 creeping red sedum plants for an east facing slope based on someone's recommendation. I should have done a little more research before I purchased because now that I am researching the plant it sounds like it really prefers sandy well draining soil. The drainage is okay in the location but it's very true clay soil. I don't want to modify the soil too much because we also planted some trees in that location (Leyland Cyprus and Junipers) so I want the soil to remain good and solid. That's the other thing, I was told that the sedum would grow fine under trees. If anyone has knowledge of or experience with creeping red sedum would you mind sharing advice? Do you think this location is just entirely the wrong match for it or do you think it can accomodate it? Thanks for the advice!

I have it growing all over the place - rockeries, edge of planters, under trees, etc. So far it grows ANYWHERE in any soil with great gusto. The only drawback is that it looks ugly early in the year - might be nice to mix a few other low growers with it.

It is dragon's blood? If so, I have found it to grow anywhere and I'm chopping it out on a routine basis. It isn't horribly invasive like lily of the valley though.

It is this type: Creeping Red Sedum - Sedum Spurium 'fulda glow'. What do you think? Novita, I'm also concerned how the foilage looks early in the year.

Actually, I think what I have is dragon's blood - maybe your variety wouldn't look so bad. It just that it dies down for the winter, but it's starting to leaf up already. It does grow under trees, in poor soil. Saxafrage "London Pride" is a good one for that too.

Sedum spurium 'Fulda Glut' (note correct name) is considered an improved form of 'Dragon's Blood'. It is typically labeled as "semi-evergreen" so right before it starts to push out its new growth. it probably looks its least appealing. But not enough to cause concern :-) And it seems to thrive in poor soils - too rich a soil will produce leggy, lank growth. I have it undegrowing a conifer and it does very well.
