Can be white, pink or red. Nurseries have named forms, you could plant a color sequence.

It might be flowering quince. It is blooming now.

Those also have some of the flowers in bunches.

I think it is closer to the pictures I've seen of flowering quince, but I will have to go to Flower World to see if I can see both together. Is one better than the other? Thanks for all your help.

Both are popular and easy here. Plant the one that looks good to you, meets other requirements you may have. The quince is thorny and suckerous, may spread to form a clump or small thicket. It does come in some colors that the currant does not and has much larger, cup-shaped individual flowers that you may find more appealing.

The currant grows as a comparatively narrow, even tree-like bush. At this time of the year it can be easily spotted flowering along roadsides. It is a native plant, the quince is not. Some people prefer to plant native plants when possible.

Quince is okay, but it has an amazing root system. Probably the hardest shrub I've ever dealt with to transplant or remove.

I remember one sizeable one that was replaced with a New Zealand Flax. The hole was so big, that the NZ Flax grew from 5 gallon size to 8' tall in 2 years, due the the volume of loosened and amended soil that filled the big hole.
