not that I would be able to identify cultivars, but I live pretty darn close. i'll drive by today and have a look.

I have a different variety, Deutzia gracilis nikko. It's more of a ground cover than a hedge, but it is also magnificent. It took a few years to establish and didn't bloom a lot the first few years, but now it's covered with blooms. It roots along the stems, so I plan to take divisions this year. Except for the papery bark displayed by larger-growing kinds with larger canes - and maybe some purple and pink touches during autumn - many people in our comparatively soft climate might think this deciduous shrub did not have enough interest to make an entire hedge of it.

Extending the season by training large-flowered clematis over it might be a solution. Most reliable varieties like 'Huldine', 'Jackmanii' and 'Nelly Moser' would have to be used or battles with slugs and clematis wilt could make this too much of a bother.

Generally, in climates like ours where a range of evergreen shrubs is possible it is better to limit deciduous shrubs to roles like forming transitions in mixed plantings between evergreen shrubs and herbaceous plants.

i would put a deciduous hedge in a spot where i wanted air and light in the winter and privacy in the summer. maybe in a part of the property that isn't used much in the winter.

i like getting extra winter peeks when the leaves go away.

I hope you do drive by eeldip, so I can share my amazement with someone. It is far from humdrum, as lovely as a Lady Banks rose in full bloom, even though only once a year.

If the flowers are double a common one is Deutzia scabra 'Plena'.
