The melons might do best under plastic all summer.

I would wait if possible till it warms up much more than now..Both of these need heat..

Summer squash is best directly sowed into the garden in May and beyond. Since it is harvested before maturity, it has a relatively short growing period. In fact you can get multiple summer squash crops by staggering plantings every few weeks. I guess starting summer squash indoors you get can get an early batch.

I direct sow my summer squash and start storage squashes and pumpkins indoors. I started a few squashes early this year for some experiments, but I will start my regular crop next week.

A friend that grows vegetables under plastic is going to try to keep bees inside one of the tunnels so he can keep the melons covered all summer this year. Last year he took the plastic off to allow pollinating insects to come in and thinks it reduced the results he got with the crop.

Hi,I'm from Ireland and started growing 6 honeydew and 6 sugar baby watermelons in containers on my windowsill over a month ago,we've had the worst summer I can ever remember so far so couldnt put them outside.They are looking really healthy and starting to produce male flowers so and I need to transplant them to pollinate as the weather is picking up finally.Just wanted to know if they will do well transplanting so late and any tips to give them there best chance of survival.First time trying to grow watermelons so any help would be really appreciated,thanks in advance.

My experience is that these plants don't do well when transplanted, even with an intact root ball.
