Round Up

Don't spray it on the dogs or let them in the area when it is still wet and you will be fine.

Is it in your grass or your beds?

In beds I hand weed, then sheet mulch, then Roundup anything that punches through. At least I'm using fewer chemicals that way. Next to my pond I can't use any kind of herbicide, so I'm stuck hand weeding and they flat out refuse to die despite me going after them with a weeding knife weekly. Buttercups are persistent!

In the lawn, Scott's Weed and Feed does a great job of killing buttercups, but you will have to keep your pets off of it 24 hours.

I hate these chemicals too, but if buttercup is established, it's time to pull out the big guns.

Does this require an instant fix? How about working it out a section at a time? I did that in my yard, now working on the last heavy-duty section, and I just make it one more task in the garden ("goodbye, buttercup, you were a pretty thing, but a passing fancy"). Then it's on to the Bishop's Weed and the morning glory vines. In four years on a quarter-acre, we've got it under control; not gone, mind you, but under control. I chafed at the neighbors' gardening habits for nothing, considered chemicals and even tried them a time or two, but nothing eliminates the stuff so it's now part of my way of keeping the wildness of nature out of my little cultivated patch. I love every one of 'em that gets tugged out. Correction: I love tugging every one of 'em out!

Helpful hint - they're really easy to get in very early spring when they're small and nothing else is surfacing.

I suggest smothering with newspaper, black plastic with mulch on top, or carpet. Carpet that has just been ripped out of someone's house is free and a nice surface to play on.:-)

If you find that roundup is unable to defeat the vile weeds, A simple cord weed eater should do the job. That's what I used to destroy them in our yard(round up has failed me). They don't have any woody material in them, so you won't go through much cord at all.

Borrow one if you must, you shan't be disappointed.

Nairn, wouldn't the cord weed eater make the weed spread even more by spreading any seeds? This would be easier & healthier for the enviroment & the pups.
