golden advice

So I made a blueprint of my yard and have a spot or two that gets some morning-then shade-then late afternoon-eveningish sun. I made a list of golds that Im concidering for this spot but would like advice on them. They are-

Ultraviolet Light

Birchwood Parky's Gold (fell in love with this in Zillis's book)

Jimmy Crack Corn

Dragon tails

Gold Regal

I already have August Moon, Golden tiara and what I think are a couple Janets.

I also have a spot for a couple blues and am thinking of

Blue Angel

Blue Tail

Id say I already have an Elegans but my track record shows that they dont come back after winter, so Im not mentioning it.

Any ideas, opinions, and mood altering meds are welcome.

If you don't have them, I would recommend Zounds, Fried Bananas, Pineapple Upsidedown Cake, Sun Power, and, for blues, Halcyon or Love Pat.

I shouldve stated at the beginning of this post that I dont like puckered or corrugated leaves.

Look at Sun Power, also, how much space do you have to work with?

You GOTTA have Maui Buttercups. Not the fastest grower perhaps, but great substance and color.

    Upnort,
Whaaaaat? no puckering or corrugated leaves? You really are becoming a "Hosnob "arent you? What is next? No dirty roots? Oh well gotta run Yaght Club brunch is at noon! LOL!

LOL! I think hostas should be called Hydrangeas because every time someone asked about some of them-IT SNOWBALLS! okay, that was Jimmy Crack Corny but I couldnt stop myself. As far as space, Im terrible at guessing measurement. On the plan I have room for 6 fairly good size plants, not including whats already there (ferns, bleeding heart, etc) They would be on somewhat of a raised island and planted casually around a spruce and bird bath. Its the sun that concerns me. This spot gets morning sun then its shaded by the 2 spruce but then in late afternoon part of it gets it again by sun. My Janet is paperwhite by August, its in the same area, but its huge and happy. I love the way it looks at around 5 a.m. now, it glows in the moonlight. Anyway, Ive got all winter to work on this but have to send the Zillis book back to southern wisconsin in 2 weeks so Id like to get my choices finalized by then (yeah,,,,,hahahahaaaahahaaaaa)

    Hi Renie,
Do you have"The Color Encyclopedia of Hosta"by Diana Grenfell & Michael Shadrack?it is still in print so you could buy it,and study all winter long.not every thing in there applies to one sun condition, but the pictures are nice, and there is a lot of helpful info.in the book.
Check it out,see what you think.

    I also like Zounds.

    Lol Carol!
I think one of the first posts I made in here was how great that book was. I had interlibrary loaned it from Madison but had to send it back. I do love that book even tho "someone" thinks because it was written in england that we should be all hosnob and poo-poo it.
Denny, too funny! What can I tell ya, the wrinkly messy look just puts me over the edge. Id want to take my iron out in the yard and tackle them with spray starch. Now you tell me, whats a "YAGHT" club? Is that a place for hags to go boating??? If so how much is a yearly pass?

I kind of agree with upnort about winkles and crinkles. Most of my large hostas collect debre from the oak trees in the spring and also later on the maple tree seeds. It reminds me of wiping a babys bottom everytime I clean out the stem/leaf connection of each plant! I thought I was through doing that kind of thing after my grandchildren grew up. LOL

What a person won't do to make our hostas look nice!

Connie, I feel like I went to a Hostaholic meeting and finally 'fessed up as to why I dont like the wrinkly-crinkly leaves but I got to tell you, your confession sure beats mine! Dontcha feel so good to get that out and off your chest? aaaahhhhh....... :)

    Upnort,
A man messes up one time and gets his face rubbed in it.I meant Yacht Club and if you have to ask the price then it is obvious that you cannot afford it !(pretty Hosnobby Huh?) I love the wrinkles and bumps ! I think it gives the Hosta Character and dimension. Whatever doesn't get washed off with a hose just stays.

Connie ,If you are wiping a butt that has wrinkles and crinkles then.. it probably isn't a babies! LMAO!

    Way to funny!!! LOL

I got Dragon Tails back in the spring (Hallsons). Neat little hosta. Starts out yellow and then turns apple green by the end of the season.

Well how about Gold Standard? If you can find an old one from some one reliable.I really like this hosta.
    Carol

Denny, funny as usual! Nice visual there too, didnt need that!
jbranch, you win a hosta! Youre the first one to actually comment on a plant I have on my list! Thanx! I bet you were the teachers pet!
Carol, I have 2 Janets, which are smaller versions of Gold Standard so thats why its not on my list.

Okay, cleaning off the screen of my monitor--you just don't dare sip coffee and read some of this stuff
at the same time!!! Wipe, wipe!!

Okay, as to the wrinkles and such, I use to feel the same way about them, until some of mine got to that
stage of their lives, ahem (like any of us will one day, as well--so it's nice to age together)!

And, I agree with ken (oh my!), Dick Ward is an outstanding example of how wrinkles CAN look good
on a hosta! If you don't have one--run to get it! It is almost perfection with well defined contrasting
colors and those colors very vivid!!!

Why is it, that men always look good in wrinkles and we ladies really hate ours???

That's not true,Janice! Men don't like wrinkles any more than you do! I don't have a lot, despite my age,but I'm thankful. I recommend Fried Bananas,if you don't like wrinkles,Upnort. It is nice and golden, and has smooth leaves, and grows like a weed, with fragrant white flowers. Phil

I just got Moon Lily and Diva and I love them - bright gold with a dusty wax finish....and they are still looking perfect this late in the season!

Plus I really like my new Sea Gulf Stream, Rich Uncle, Rascal, Tequila Sunrise and Cold Heart...plus white edged golds - Sun Kissed, Joshua's Banner, Lakeside Prissy Miss and Sunshine Glory. I guess you could say it was a golden year!

Birchwood Parky's Gold is stunning as a mature plant- It is rather plain jane compared to some- but it mounds so nicely and is so full- standing tall and proud on it's tall stalks- and the thin heart shaped well rounded leaves will flutter a bit in the breeze from top to bottom of the mound- It will mature quickly- and is a tough cookie, not needing to be coddled.
Gold Regal has more substance to it's larger leaves and can stand neglect- in the sun even! It is a slower grower- but it can stand being bumped around a bit- It even will look a bit "blue" as it seems to show a bit of a waxy look to it's leaves at times.
I am waiting to see what Jimmy Crack Corn will do- but I am liking very much what I see so far...
Dragon Tails is new to me this year- so I can not say much about it- other that it looks good in the pictures!
Blue Angel is holding it's own, out in the woods, holding back the buckthorn without any help from me... It is 2 and starting to look very nice!! It is a strong grower-
HHmmm- still thinking of only a few?

    lol Julie,
Actually my list is up to 12! Thanx for all the info on these plants. I mustve seen a pic of a mature Parky's gold because it was just stunning. I dont think the gold regal will end up where I had planned but thats okay too!
    Thanx again, Renie
