Honeysuckle, rose or clematis. Combining roses and honeysuckles (or clematis) works well. With all climbers confined to defined architectural spaces expect to be doing yearly pruning and training to establish and maintain desired effect. "Bad hair day" means you need to prune. Also, trumpet creepers are large and vigorous climbers, possibly the wrong choice for the spots you have them in. I have helped work on one that goes to the top of a multi-storey mansion and gets into the gutter. (We have to use a fireman's ladder to prune it).

How do you like akebia? I just planted one this year and I really like the small leaves - it is much prettier overall then my clematis. The clematis has the superior flowers, but my vine isn't too great looking. Of course, i haven't grown it long enough to know what it is like longer term.

This spring, I picked up a jasmine that is hardy in our climate if you want fragrance.

It might be helpful to know what type of sun conditions this area receives. Passionflower and jasmine generally prefer a full sun location and will thrive in one that receives reflected heat as well. They will dwindle in one that gets too much shade for their liking. Clematis and akebia will tolerate much shadier situations. Knowing the light conditions should get you some specific suggestions that can really thrive in that location.

I'd also offer a word of caution about the trumpet vine. Once well established, this vine has a propensity for sending up shoots from the root system, often at quite a distance from the mother plant. Extremely annoying and very time consuming to chase down and remove these unwanted shoots from other planting areas or worse, from between pavers in walks or patios. Even though my hummingbirds adored it, I finally removed mine (and what a chore THAT was!!) as it was far too messy and far too aggressive.

Some of the small flowered clematis have very elegant and dainty leaves.
