I do not know if you have room for it, but my favorite cheerful year round plant is a coral bark maple. Beautiful bright bark in winter, gorgeous apricot and green spring foliage that turns a sunny yellow green in summer, apricot orange foliage in fall.

If by Golden Barberry you mean the lime color one, I'd hate to tell but it looses its leaves in the winter. I love mine in the summer but in winter it does not amount to much.

Roses are good with barberries. Some kinds have colorful stems in winter, and persistent fruits. Otherwise look for something that has an arching growth habit similar to that of the barberry.

Yes golden barberries are deciduous. I thought at first you wanted something colorful in winter to make up for the lack of interest from the barberry at that time, but maybe not.

I know that golden barberries are deciduous, i want it to brighten my cloudy spring/summer/fall days. I want something bright for winter next to it. I love idea of a coral bark maple but i don't have space for it. Looking for something smaller. I don't have luck with roses and don't like pruning them. Maybe some other ideas?

For winter stem color and persisting fruits you would likely as not use one of the wild rose species rather than the modern garden hybrids you are probably referring to.

Rosa glauca, which also has gray leaves that look well with yellow leaves. Its hips tend to go black before winter here but its young stems are colorful in winter. If flowers and fruits not required can be pruned low each year to grow as a foliage plant. This would also serve to limit height and prevent development of old stems lacking the color of the new. And like other roses it may still manage to bloom a little off of lower parts of stems even if hard-pruned at the end of winter.

If what you want is something for winter color could you use one of the new variegated abelias, dwarf nandina, even autumn fern. How about black mondo grass for a really 'hot' alternate. You will lose it in the fall but you lose the yellow of the barberry so if you have one of the other evergreens in there too it would jazz it up. Goshiki Osmanthus might get too big for you at 4-6' but it has good color. You'll have to see if any of these look good with the yellow of your particular barberry. They seem to range in color in different cultivars. Good luck!
