I notice the same thing with our strawberries this year!

Maybe they need more sunshine to bring out the flavour?

that heatwave caused a run of crappy peas for me. the newer ones are better.

We had a unusually dry May, I wondered if I overwatered the strawberries...

And the past few days, thundershowers and high winds knocked down some of the peavines that hadn't quite attached to their pole strings. :-( Hope you have better luck with yours!

The snap peas from my wife's vegetable garden are pretty good this year. I don't believe that she planted until May, though, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

I always blame it on the soil -- nothing beats the sweet silty loam of the hardwood forest midwest.
No way to replicate it here in the new soils of the post pleistocene.
