placed an order for hosta

Today I ordered from Hallson Gardens for the first time, after noticing so many folks here have had good experiences with them. I'm excited and had to tell someone. Hubby is happy if I'm happy, but really could care less, so I chose to share my excitement with you all ;-)

I've ordered: Marylin Monroe, Sky Dancer and Rocket's Red Glare. It was difficult to refrain from clicking on several more. I thought it best to see how this order goes first. Next is to focus my energy onto tending to them in prep for Fall going into Winter.

No one has ever posted about anyone unhappy with a Hallson's order. Lots of people post of being happy. That says a lot.

    Deb,

Please post some pics of your plants when they arrive. I'm sure you will be impressed with them.

    Hi Deb,
you can order with confidence. here's a link to a few pics I posted of my first Hallson's order. Just LOOK at the roots! My Hoosier Dome had roots almost 18 inches long.
Have fun with your new babies!

Yes exactly bkay! All the positive comments and photos that I've read and seen were what steered me in their direction. We have a nice nursery that I buy from, but these varieties are different from what they offer.

OK, Steve, I'll post pics when they arrive. With Monday being a holiday, fingers crossed they will get here around the end of next week... I'm nervous, but in a good way ;-)

I really wanted "Rhino Hide" but alas, it was sold out. I'm thinking that RH, and two or three others, would make a nice Spring order from them...

Oh my goodness, Michelle! Whoa, now I'm reeaally nervous and a bit more giddy!

    One question:
If mine come with those wonderful roots, would it be OK if I trimmed them a little? I intentionally bought medium size @ maturity hosta for planting in large pots.

Deb, You made the right decision in ordering from Hallson. Even though I only had my first oder from them ~ 2 weeks ago. I am already a happy customer. I ordered one Blue Hawaii. I wanted a vase shaped hosta and already have Krossa Regal. It was on sale for $10 (ended Aug 29). I received the shipment 4 days later. Nicely packed and large healthy plant. And I was nicely surprised with a bonus, a healthy and large 2 eyed First Frost! Unfortunately I did not take pictures before planting them. But here is a picure with them in the ground.

Also I like to thank Steve_mass for sharing the trick in posting pictures. It is so easy now.

Best of luck and enjoy your new hostas.

Vivian, what a great job you did making that new bed for the hosta. Love your dog--sure keeping an eye on something!

My advice for Guacamole is, hold on to your hat, because it will grow quickly. Hallson sent as a bonus Rosedale Golden Goose on one of my orders, and I totally love that gold-leafed tough substanced STRONG hosta.

I took Chris advice on metal name tags for my hosta. With mine in containers, losing the names would be disastrous.

Your Blue Hawaii looks similar to my Clear Fork River Valley as a youngster--but then ALL of mine are young!

    ==>> nope.. nada.. NEVER!!!!!!

just call chris and talk to him ... though with the holiday.. i dont know if he will be sitting by the phone...

hosta emerge on stored energy ...

they started storing energy in late june ..

cut off the roots.. and you will have an impact on the plants... either smaller in spring.. or less growth the following year ....

basically.. what you are suggesting is a form of bonsai...

as a newbie.. i suggest you learn about them first.. rather than try a new art form ...

Hmmm another pot head! I grow in pots always. When it comes to hosta orders, especially from Hallsons, I wait and see what the roots are going to be and then choose my pot accordingly. Make sure you have good drainage. Have a great grow day, Paula

I love MM and Sky Dancer! Hallson's never disappoints.

Dig a wide hole and spread out those roots! You will be so glad you did when spring comes.

OK, thanks, I'll be leaving the roots intact. Waiting for the new arrivals are roomy pots and medium with good drainage, no worries with that. Thanks to everyone for the advice and encouragement. Photos to follow.

And Vivian, Chocolate is just too cute!!

Deb, when you get your box of goodies from Hallson, you will find a nice "bonus" plant, and I'm sure that will be something you enjoy growing. I've received some of my favorites from Chris at Hallson. Not that I knew about the hosta when it arrived, but soon I discovered that it was a good growing and pretty plant. Like my Rosedale Golden Goose...always a winner! And he also sent Rocket's Red Glare, which is a desirable plant too. And Avocado, which is one of my fragrant plantaginea family. So yeah, you'll be very happy.

So the dog is named Chocolate? Now why did I not SEE that?
    Mercy!

    Chocolate woofs : 'Nice Hostas!'

I've received an email from Hallson and my newbie hostas are scheduled to arrive tomorrow! Woot! I'll post pics tomorrow evening, if they aren't delayed.

It'd be pretty sweet if there was a bonus, but I'm plenty happy with what I've ordered.
