Any suggestions for my very first vegetable garden?

I'm in the Adirondack mountains and we have a very short growing season, generally snow cover all winter. I'm going to buy seedlings and seed tomorrow and would appreciate any suggestions.

Tomatoes, peppers, some herbs, string beans, my DH hates eggplant so none of that, squash - should I try carrots and radishes?

Sorry no one answered in time (you've probably already bought your plants).

There are actually quite a variety of plants you can grow, but to be safe maybe go with the quicker ripening tomato types (your local greenhouse should cater to varieties for your area). There are even melons, etc which are said to ripen in 90 days.

Carrots, beets, radishes are safe bets, though even in cooler zones sometimes radishes don't do as good if you plant them late in the season (too warm).

Thanks, Glen. Unfortunately my local greenhouse closed two years ago. We have WalMart unless we drive 50 miles.

We put in everything you suggested except melons. And we gave a shot to some broccoli. Cross your fingers.
