I originally overwintered my fish in the aquarium. When they sort of outgrew that, a preform pond (the plastic ones usually placed inground). Last year I graduated to a stock tank, the type used for cattle or horse feed.

I have heard of people using rubbermaid garbage cans, home made indoor ponds built with lumber and pond liner, or even rigid plastic kiddy swimming pools. I guess it depends on the type of filter, the number and size of fish, etc. Whatever you use, make sure it seems sturdy for the volume of water.

Thanks to both of you for the info. glen, I didn't think of a preform. I started with 2 adults; went to 50; some didn't make it; put in 14 this year; have new babies; not sure how many. I also did the aquarium but I think that's past me by now. Do you put a pump in the stock tank? Do you put it in your basement or cold room? How many fish do you have? Koi? Goldfish? Marric, does your brother use a pump?

My sister kept her Koi in a 150 gallon tank over winter and a friend took the goldfish. I'm not sure of the status of fish she has at the moment so I not sure if she'll do the same thing. Pumps and filters were still needed. The same outside pump was used but on the low setting and a bubbler just to keep the water moving without slasping all over. Lights and cover helped them from jumping our.

I have overwinter my fish in a garden tote for years now,,, they outgrew the aquarium and seeing as goldfish can't back up the round tote was better.

I put my pond pump in the tote to and keep in the guest bedroom.

Thanks all for the responses. As you can tell I'm probably getting paranoid about my fish already. Debbie, when you mention a garden tote do you mean something like those big Rubbermaid containers? How big is it and how many can you get in it? Sounds like this could work for me.
