Walter Reed Army Medical Center says don't freeze plastic water bottles because dioxin carcinogens are released which can cause cancer, especially breast cancer.

This is an urban myth, and has no basis in fact. Before cautioning people about something, it is worth the short time it takes to consult one of the urban myth sites to see if it is actually true or just another email hoax.

The myth started back in early 2002 by a claim made by a man during a television interview in Hawaii. As this "news" circulated over the years, it fraudently gained "endorsements" from agencies such as Walter Reed and Johns Hopkins University, among others. Interestingly, these "endorsements" usually took the form of "information being circulated at Walter Reed....", rather than any outright assertion that Walter Reed (or anyone else) actually made any statement about or was actually studying the issue. How this is now on a garden blog is amazing!

Also amazing is that in just 3 posts the plastic bottle dioxin myth moved from a response to the blog into the blog itself, thus illustrating how these things get started. :-)
