Fountain bamboo prefers lack of direct sun and will roll up during bright weather if not protected from it. Just about any other Fargesia should also be suitable - assuming soil conditions acceptable and there is room for the stems to grow up and out without running afoul of overhanging branches.

I would stick with one of the more upright Fargesias. F. robusta might be one of the best choices. In my experience the more pendulous Fargesias tend to lose their shape and don't develop into full plants in too much shade.

F. robusta on Camano has the same mode as others - a central section of upright young culms ringed by arching older ones.

On a tall plant with larger-than usual leaves. Plants on a moist clay slope above a pond it quickly made a large specimen.

In case you don't know, there's a bamboo nursery in the Portland area that has a good selection of clumping varieties. They have display gardens, so you can stroll around and see the different types they sell, clumpers and runners. You can read about the clumper varieties on their website.

I now have 2 robustas and they live up to their name. They send up a lot of shoots in spring. My first one has sent up over 25 the past 2 years and it's less than 5 years old.
