What is eating my climbing hydrangea?

I have also posted this on the hydrangea site--I am not sure how much longer my plant will last! I am new to the area (and the west coast) so I am not really familiar with local pests. In May I removed a rhodedendren (one of 12 on my lot) and planted a climbing hydrangea in front of my chimney. I was not expecting lots of growth this first season. For a couple of weeks it looked green and happy and even sprouted a couple of leaves. Now, all leaves have bite holes at the edges, what is left is turning brown and several vines are stripped of all leaves and dry and brittle. Is this slugs? caterpillars? sasquatch?
