First is black cottonwood. The second is probably a Scouler willow.

My first impression is California Bay and Fireweed.

larry: Could I expect the bay leaves to have a fragrance/perfume when crushed? The leaves did not seem to have much of a smell, but perhaps I was looking at too young a leaf/plant.

Also, is the California bay hardy in the Seattle area (Zone 8)? If this is a bay, I would love to grow it and I will pot it if it is going to freeze (from what I read the bay laurel is rather difficult to germinate from seed)?

It's another willow, Umbellularia is quite different. That does grow here, forming large specimens in time on some sites, and even reseeding. But it is definitely native well south of our area, and like coast redwood and tanoak showed leaf burn after the 1990 winter.
