Great plant for full sun or partial shade.... moist soil. Other than that it's very easy to grow. It's not winter hardy here in pots... might not even be hardy in the ground and established if a cold winter comes along. I'd say below 20 degrees is pushing your luck.

I bought this plant too and was so excited that it was rated to O degress on the tag. I should have known better as I would already have heard about it! I talked to the grower who explained that it was hardy to 0 degrees centigrade but the buyer at Swansons has over wintered this plant and it may be hardier than originally thougtht. The jury is still out. But then I spoke with Sean Hogan, who has a history with this plant and he didn't feel this was going to be perfectly hardy but that good drainage and a sheltered location would give it a better chance of surviving. I am leaving one out this winter and I know a few others that will be trialing it as well. Lets check back next summer!!!

Well I killed mine in a pot, that's why I posted that. It dropped to about 22 degrees five nights in a row. Save cuttings! You should try P. laetevirens or P. ferox - those seem to be sorting themselves out as the hardiest ones.

My Pseudopana "Saber" I planted in April 2013. It was about 1.5 foot tall, by the end of summer it was over 5 feet tall. December 2014 came along with a temperature down to 17° with about a week of night temperatures below freezing day temperatures just above freezing. It died. Ian warned me they weren't hardy here, and he was right.

That is too bad. Such a unique beautiful plant and would have worked great to screen from our neighbors, esp since it apparently grows so fast! I'd be tempted to try it anyway but the nearby nursery is selling them for $36.99 and I really need like 10 of them. Probably not worth the risk.

Hi Susan my plant has been planted out for about four years as an understory plant beneath large conifers. It’s a bit spindly and reaching for the sun. Had it been planted in the open it most surely would have died. I do have a Pseudopanax crassifolius in the open that’s surprisingly doing fine. It’s been in the ground for three winters now.

P. crassifolius is hardy for most of Western Washington and Oregon, but it is a lot like jack-in-the-bean-stock, It doesn't put out side branches until it gets twenty or thirty feet tall. So this plant wouldn't be a good blocker of views. And they are expensive if you can find them.
