Slime mold? These are amoebalike most of the time but also merge to form masses that give off spores.

Root rots as in phytophthora root rot are caused by water molds, these have often been referred to as fungi but are actually related to brown algae. No mushrooms from these.

Thank you bboy. I looked up slime molds and there it was...the "dog vomit slime mold" also known as "Troll's Butter" or Fuligo Septica. Apparently it is a beneficial blob. I'm just happy it's not root rot.
