Licorice Fern

I had a big leaf maple fall on the road so it had to be cut up. It was covered with licorice ferns in moss on the trunk. We now have lovely wads of moss and fern that I would like to keep alive. What is my best chance? Do licorice ferns grow on firs? Old stumps? I have plenty of old stumps but they're probably cedar and doug fir and I didn't know if licorice ferns grew on either of them. Any advice appreciated. Donna
