I had a neighbor in California that grew one as a houseplant for years, & it got quite large. He had in a window where it got bright indirect light (which is pretty much what all houseplants want). I kept one in a pot for several years outdoors & always brought it in for my Christmas tree in December. It didn't seem like a fussy plant to me.

They are more difficult here because of our lack of sunshine in the winter months. They also tend to get spider mites. It can be done but most are scraggly after a few years. The lush ones at Home Depot were grown outdoors in Florida and will drop a lot of needles acclimating to your house.

I have found it mostly quite easy and enduring. Once had a few small caterpillars, another time lost a few branches/branch sections in a short time. Never anything like the heavy mite buildups or blighting off (bacterial/fungal blackening) seen on many other common indoor foliage plants in this area. Parlor palms and other thin-leaved types seem almost guaranteed to be loaded with mites when encountered in ordinary settings. Other types seem to need more warmth than is usual.

Growth of Norfolk Island pines in gloomy interiors is different than when in better conditions but they are hardly fragile or apt to die - quite the opposite.
