I think one I saw dead there after the 1990 winter was labeled as this species, but I don't remember for sure now. Nor have I checked to see what, if anything remains there of other accessions of this species.

Probably you have looked for it in Trees of Seattle - Second Edition. It not being in there would only mean that he didn't learn of any outside of Washington Park. Kinds of trees known only at the Arboretum and not elsewhere in Seattle are not mentioned.

Hi Ian,
I have C. bakeri growing in a half barrel, and doing well. It came from Heronswood 6 or 7 years ago.
I like this tree alot, but admit there are lots more Cupressus that are showier. Still, a great cypress. I think there's a nice specimen in the Krukeberg garden...

1990 shouldn't have been cold enough to freeze this in Seattle, unless drainage was a major issue.

That's why I noticed it/they were hit, they were specimens that had been in the collection for years. It was the coldest winter in 30 years, other things got fried also - including tan oaks, coast redwoods and Oregon myrtles. But I'm not 100% sure the cypress was that species. Could have been one from farther south. I'm not even sure they died and were cut down, it seems like they are gone now but I'd have to go look. They certainly burned up nicely at the time.

I've got one on Camano that may also be this species, I'll have to look and see if there is still a tag.

It looks like the range of Cupressus bakeri extends into colder areas than tanoaks or Umbellularia. Of course it's possible that the Arboretum collection wasn't from the colder part of its range. It's been years since I've been to the conifer meadow there.
