Hosta seeds?

Does anyone have extra hosta seeds? I have gourds and daylily seeds I can trade. I so want to try hosta seed planting in my winter sow project this season.

    Carmen,

You can buy some seed from jimshostas.com. That's what I did. I'm in the middle of my winter sowing right now.

Do the seeds from jimshostas.com come true to the description? If so, it would be worth it to try some of the streaked varieties.

Seeds do not come true, PERIOD, except for 1 or 2 solid varieties.

The streaked seedlings will likely be variegated, but not streaked.

The description is there to tell you what the pod parent is like so you might be able to have some idea of what characteristics a seedling might have. But, that's only a guideline. For instance, a green and white pod parent could very well produce a completely different color, like gold...

please follow the link.. and find the 2 FAQ's on growing seed ...

mel is correct all but one species do NOT come true from seed ...

mel misstates when she said:The streaked seedlings will likely be variegated, but not streaked...

they will lead to some streaked seedlings which over the next decade or two [and some solids] .. can 'settle' into edged plants .. but they will not be mom .. nor dad if a specific cross ... e.g. though m y kids have a strong family resemblance ... they look like neither me nor mom ...

its all about genetics .. and DNA swapping.. and most of us do not care about that depth of that discussion ...

most breeders.. have ultimate goals in mind when they start ... so it would be important to them.. to know who mom and dad were ... if your breeding goal were a new small edged plant.. you would NOT start with a GIANT!!! streaked mother plant ... if you want something with blue and yellow in it.. mom would need to have the blue and the yellow ... etc ....

so if you have a choice of streaked moms ... start by deciding how big.. or leaf shape.. or fragrance [if you can find those] .... or color combo that would be pleasing to you

just invest a few bucks.. have some fun this winter.. and if you succeed with just the growing .. we can worry about choosing better next winter ...

growing indoors can be tricky.. though hosta make it pretty forgivable ....

    good luck
