Those are very lush "bare bones." I think you need to come to Minnesota to appreciate just what bare bones are. You have such a lovely garden.

Yes, T.S. Eliot must also have thought of Minnesota when he wrote in Little Gidding,

Midwinter spring is its own season
    Sempiternal though sodden towards sundown,
Suspended in time, between pole and tropic.
When the short day is brightest, with frost and fire,
The brief sun flames the ice, on pond and ditches,
In windless cold that is the heart's heat,
    Reflecting in a watery mirror
A glare that is blindness in the early afternoon.
And glow more intense than blaze of branch, or brazier,
Stirs the dumb spirit: no wind, but pentecostal fire
In the dark time of the year. Between melting and freezing
The soul's sap quivers. There is no earth smell
Or smell of living thing. This is the spring time
But not in time's covenant. Now the hedgerow
Is blanched for an hour with transitory blossom
Of snow, a bloom more sudden
Than that of summer, neither budding nor fading,
Not in the scheme of generation.
Where is the summer, the unimaginable
    Zero summer?

Uk those are lovely bare bones, very sculptured evergreens, nice structure. How do you keep your clay pots from freezing?

shade tolerant...temperature never gets low enough over here for it to effect the clay pots as long as the edges are thick enough!..some of the thinner ones crack after a couple of years...but i have had some of the bigger ones for years with no problems!

I have been wondering for some time now since I first saw your pictures of your garden this summer, What is the variegated shrubs? Are they Euonymus?

I like the snail and the kitty they are great accents!:)

Lovely garden!A pleasure to look at your gardens anytime but especially when it's -10 with blowing snow here.

Of course UK you're in a warmer zone than me. I had some thick Italian terra cotta pots that I left outdoors. They did ok for a few winters but eventually cracked.

UK, this is what we look like in the summer, the winter you would not want to see. In any case, these are lovely pictures. Thanks for posting.

Just as beautiful bone bare as in summer - you clearly have a great eye for garden design!
