Is there a pond near? It will be neat when the babies hatch. I love baby ducks. They are so light when you pick them up and cute messy. But these are wild so you will just have to watch the mom take care of them.

Adorable! All I have are lizards, snakes and frogs but some of them are cute too.

I found a little black duck on my patio once after a storm but have never found one nesting. I'm too far from water.

Do you know what kind she is? And are her eggs going to hatch? In other words, is there a drake around?

How adorable. Our dog keeps out the wildlife here. All but the feral cats that I taught her to not chase. But we have a woodchuck next door that the cats stalk, and the woodchuck ignores. Be nice to have a big enough piece of property and a pond where we had ducks, etc.

You know, I have no idea how birds make viable eggs. A male has been around but not much. I assumed once she laid them they would hatch. Hopefully the neighborhood raccoon won't find them. When they hatch she will walk them down to the pond at the end of my street. She is spending more time sitting on the nest now, and has lined it with down.

The male doesn't have to be around much.

No, once will do, but it takes at least one contact (mating episode) to get viable eggs.

She lets your get close or does the lens on your camera bring her close?

She let's me get close. The other day I weed whacked around her bed. She did take off when I started to mow, but returned within an hour. She goes down to the pond a couple of times a day.
