I've just started using Safari for Mac and I don't get the ads on Safari either.

I checked out Preferences and saw the following setting:

Preferences >> Security >> Accept Cookies >> There were three choices,
Always,
Never and
Only from sites you navigate to.
For example, not from advertisers on those sites .

The last one was checked.
