I tried googling "shrub that smells like bananas" and michelia figo came up. The common name is banana shrub. There are other michelias so it may be this or a cousin.
This link says it's marginal in zone 7.

I just looked through the species and figo is the only one I found with similar characteristics.

thanks. looks like you nailed it. they said it was originally from china, thats where i am so that kind of closes this issue for me.
