I am wondering it that isn't hesperis matronalis instead of phlox paniculata...my phlox won't bloom for some time but the hesperis, white and purple, is in blooming now.

I need to go visit. I don't think we went one time last year.

I think you're right. It looks just like the hesperis matronalis in pics.

It looked so much like phlox yet I thought it seemed awful early but figured maybe some bloomed early. I don't know a lot about them and a lot of stuff doesn't have an ID tag. Too bad I can't edit posts, but I'll put it down correctly on my blog. Thanks!

Have you been to that small public garden out by the art museum? I drove by today and it's looking fantastic. There's a big patch of what I think are orange poppies making a spectacle of themselves. I'm going to stop by this week and take some pics.

The garden you refer to just south of the Springfield Art Museum is at the corner of S National and E Linwood. It's the Xeriscap Master Gardener Demonstration Garden which is a satellite garden also maintained by the Master Gardeners of Greene County.

Plants you purchased from the plant sale that you purchased may have come from either garden or from member's gardens. If you do take more pics, let me know if you'd be interested in your own photo album at the Friends of the Garden website.

So Violet, were the poppies you mentioned at this satellite garden or did I miss them at the Close Garden? I know I missed the conifers.

The poppies are at the Xeriscape Garden at S National Ave & E Linwood, just south of the Springfield Art Museum on the west side of National. There are lots of things in bloom there. Ornamental alliums should be coming on around now too there.

The Botanical Center & Gardens has now tied the two parks together to form one park called Nathanael Greene:Close Memorial Park which is inclusive of the total 114 acres. The Conifer Garden is tucked away so the maps below will help.

They are tricky to transplant but I have done it before.

Are they Oriental poppies Glenda? They are doing very well. My opium poppies are few and far between this year again. What grows in that area after the poppies die back?

Yes, oriental. They are perennial.....nothing grows over them. They die completely down and then in late summer/ early fall send up top growth again that doesn't get very tall. I will have to pay attention this year and see what it looks like.
