the moles here have to be the toughest in the nation. i have to garden above ground in raised beds because of the rocky conditions. these critters just tunnel anywhere. amazing to me!
I bet if they did a study, our moles would be the strongest. We should be proud. lol I was planting some flowers in a bed at the front of my house last week and must've scared a mole out of hiding. I watched him rip through the sod and dig a new hole with amazing speed. I decided I wouldn't have wanted to be holding him in my hand. I think they could tunnel through that too.
the moles haven't done any damage to the flowers or vegetables but there isn't a spot here where you can sink a trowel or spade without hitting rocks. it is amazing to me that they can navigate at all.
I sure do agree about the strong moles. The voles must be strong too. There is no way they can go from place to place without running into rock no matter how soft my flowr beds are. vickie
Moles can actually dig 100' of tunnel in one day, that is 1 mole doing that, they are solitary animals and one mole will occupy one place at a time, they are not family oriented. 1 mole when digging has the ability to make 18' an hour, that is alot of tunnel for one mole. Also, their primary food source is not grubs, it is earthworms, that is a proven fact.
Right, moles are worm eaters. The main damage they do is tearing up the ground. Gophers on the other hand, which also live here, love to eat flower bulbs. They will eat crocus, tulips, hyacinths, lilies. Only daffodils and Naked Ladies, both of which are poisonous, escape them. One even ate all the roots off of a large rosebush, which then toppled over. I hate gophers even worse than moles.
