NY/PA GARDENS-plse advise!

we're thinking of doing our own ny/pa garden tour/trip beginning 7/25. the itinerary i have in mind is :

Home(Boston area) to Stonecrop to PepsiCo. to Wave Hill to Brooklyn Botanical Gardens( to Phila Museum of Art(maybe)) to Chanticleer to the Barnes Foundation( to FallingWater/Pittsburgh.) and home. Of these gardens, we have only been to wave hill, so we have an idea of time needed there. have you been to any of the others and might you have any advice as to what

kind of time we should allot,ideally, to them ?we're pretty much interested in all plant material except roses(there has to be something, doesn't there!?) but our particular interests are foliage , woody plant material and wonderful design. Aside from Winterthur/Longwood Gardens- do any other very special gardens pop up in your mind that i haven't mentioned?thank you in advance.

You may want to visit Bowmans Hill Wildflower preserve in Washington's Crossing Pa. A tour of New Hope and maybe a ride on the canal ?? Great day trip.

The gardens at the Art Museum in Philly are not very extensive. I was there for the azaela display and am not sure if there is much happening there now. Also, I think you need reservations/tickets to go through the Barnes. You didn't mention Longwood Gardens - the granddaddy of all gardens! It is in Penna, close to the Delaware border. I am sure they have a website. Enjoy!!

I'm not sure there would be much blooming at Bowman's. Wildflowers usually bloom in the spring. New Hope is worth visiting, though.

Longwood for sure! And also maybe Bartram's Garden, and Morris Arboretum at U Philadelphia.

If you do decide to stop by the Art Museum (which I drive by every day to go to work), they actually have tons of different mac hydrangeas in bloom as well as alot of now-waning oakleafs blooming. There are also a number of late-blooming rhodies in bloom, crape myrtles blooming, and a whole row of varigated redtwig dogwoods looking lush. Not long ago, they did alot of landscaping work around the grounds of the Art Museum and in the actual Azalea Gardens so there's lots going on in there nowadays with a focus on structure and year-round interest (particularly with the use of the redtwigs) and including a number of perennials, like those that work in shade and part shade!

Not sure if it's within the area you have in mind, but Chanticleer is one not to miss. It's in Wayne, PA, just outside of Philadelphia.

You may want to look at the Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill. I seem to recall that being quite a lovely place to walk around. Pales in comparison to Longwood, but it's nice none the less. I grew up 2 miles from Longwood Garden and live only 15 minutes from there now. So they get my biggest recommendation.

If you are visiting Wave Hill and Brooklyn Botanic Garden and have more time for NY, maybe consider the NY Botanic Garden, the Conservatory Garden in Central Park, and the Cloisters on the Northern edge of the Park.

Incidentally, are you Mindy? If so, I had the pleasure of visiting your gardens many years ago (two different times)!!!! Have wonderful pictures somewhere in my messy office....
