How to prune. Bloom on old or new wood?

Hi. I am new to this forum. We have a rather large Pass Careula that has completely covered our entry trellis. I have always cut it back in spring as the vines would die back in winter. This year, most of the vines have survived and some have even kept growing. However, there are several vines that have died. If I leave the healthy vines will they bloom this year? Or do they only bloom on new wood? Thanks! Sam

They bloom on new growth, but usually from new growth off of old wood. Many selections will not bloom if killed back to the ground every winter, but there are some selections that will come back from the roots and bloom reliably.

Has your vine bloomed before? If it has bloomed before after getting killed back, it should bloom even more with some old wood surviving.

Thanks to both of you. Yes, the Passi has bloomed for the past three years. The previous years it has died back to the ground so there wasn't a question about pruning. It comes back with a vengence and blooms all summer long through autumn. It is so beautiful, esp. located on the trellis that leads to the entry. So, I think I will prune and leave a couple of old vines and see what happens. Again, Thank You. SAM
