First Time To Be Away ...

In the next few months, I will be leaving home because of job reassignment. Surely I am going to miss my mom, my room, my dog and everything in my home. I don't know what to do to kill boredom and longing if I will leave the place where I spend my life with :'(

New places to live are so exciting! A bit scary and overwhelming, too. Here are some advice tidbits from "Auntie" tipi.

First of all, stay safe while you learn about your neighborhood.

During the day, take walks through your neighborhood to begin recognizing people. Go at all different times of day and take different routes instead of going every day at such-and-so time like clockwork. Keep alert and aware of your surroundings. In a couple of weeks, one or two of the people you see while taking a walk might begin to recognize you and maybe nod their head in greeting.
Shop at the local market every day or two. Get in the lane of your "favorite" cashier. Learn that person's name and greet him or her by name each time.
If there is a diner or other gathering place within walking distance, go and have a cup of tea or coffee every three or four days. Tip generously (20% at least). You will get better and better service as the waitstaff recognize you and rush to seat you in their section. If you stay a long time just sipping your drink while reading the paper, realize that someone else could have come during that time, and you have taken up your server's "tip" opportunities. In this case personally give your server $2.00 and say, "Thank you."
For your safety, do not tell people exactly where you live. Just say "I am new to the area." Then get THEM talking about things to do, sights to see, annual festivals, and so on. If the conversation lags, say, "Tell me more about ____." For your safety, do not disclose information about yourself except at the most superficial level (things you can both see or hear while you are talking).
When meeting new acquaintances/friends, do so on "neutral" territory for the first few months/semester. Neutral territory means at a public location. Not at either of your homes.
When you leave, say that you have a few errands to run. Do not go straight home. You don't want to be followed or ambushed. (As you may have inferred, bad stuff happened to me because I was too trusting.)

If you miss having a dog, volunteer at the local Animal Humane program.

If you miss children in your family, volunteer at your place of worship. The children and their families will share the same values as you do.

Nighttime is a bit different. This is the time when your long-established routines will be helpful. Things like always sweeping the floor, taking the trash out before it is dark, and then locking the doors in the evening. If you do not have well-established routines, may I suggest the website FlyLady.net. She takes the tasks of running a household and breaks them down into 15 minute increments. You will get lots of encouragement on this site. FlyLady sells high quality household cleaning tools in order to pay the fees so her site can be free.

When I moved to my first apartment, before computers and cell phones, my mother suggested that my first "big ticket" item be a television so I would feel less isolated and alone. She knew me so well. It really helped me. Now you have Houzz as one site to connect with other folks.

    You are not alone.
    Best wishes, tipi

    Hi, tipi here again.
Think about your favorite things and memories. If you like your bed covering, can you take it with you to the new apartment?
Familiar desk accessories and/or desk set-up might make that area more familiar.

    Again, best wishes,
    tipi

One of the great things about technology is the ability to chat with your love ones via webcam so at least you can see their facial expressions and chat as long as you want for free given you have internet connection.

At least the apartment is furnished so you don't have to worry about taking major pieces of furniture during the move.

    Best of Luck.

bellandromeda, how are you doing today? What are your thoughts?

Hello, for sure I am going to note down all the suggestions that you made tipi. How I am so thankful that I have signed up in here and take such good advices like this. I am just bit nervous, too much thinking about the future. Now I really can feel the longing and sadness but I think it will be the perfect way for me to grow up also, to learn things that life has to offer and to make myself. Yeah I agree and I am thankful about what technology is bringing because even if I am away, it still seems not. Thank you again.
