None of them will overtake your yard if you simply mow. :-) That said, the easiest to care for are going to sucker. That's simply the way of the passion vine. If you want fruit, you should be able to grow edulis in your area without much trouble. The cultivar "Nancy Garrision" is supposed to be cold-hardy and produce a quality purple fruit. Edulis isn't known for suckering as much as some other species, although the flower isn't as flashy.

Incarnata is native and produces decent fruit, but will sucker aggressively. Incense is a hybrid that has a gorgeous flower and rarely fruits. Very easy to care for, but suckers as well. Caerulea is hardy and easy to care for, will produce mediocre orange fruit. Suckers, but not as much as the other two (in my experience). Those may be the easiest to grow, but I'm sure other Florida residents may have more suggestions.

LOL..I say start cheap!!!! They can get you all wound up in their beauty and fruit and leaves and just the one that may become extinct.... Anywhere you choose to start the butterflies are going to love it....Good Luck!!!

I started out with a Imperatrice Eugenie....that I got at Home Depot. The Gulf Fritillary butterflies adore it and visit everyday. It faces south in full sun and does fabulously. The blossoms are so sweet the perfume the whole yard. IF you can have a choice I know that the incarnata is the one that the butterflies go to in the wild. I've only recently gotten a few others, but none seem to draw in the butterflies quite like the Eugenie.

If you want the passie to serve as a host plant for butterflies don't get a red variety. I've heard that some reds are actually toxic to the cats that feed on it.
