That's probably a Lady Margaret, or possibly the similar Red Inca. Officially, they're only hardy up to zone 9, but I'm trying a cutting out in zone 8b.

The short answer is no, it will not survive zone 5 winters.

The longer answer is that almost no passiflora will survive in zone 5. There are some populations of incarnata native to the Ohio River valley that may be able to stick it out, and some lutea of northern lattitude provenance should come back in the spring. But Lady Margaret will not.

On the bright side, it's an easy one to grow in a pot...

I was hoping for a better answer, since I paid good money for this. I'm thinking I might be returning it because I don't typically pay that much for a hardy perennial, let alone one that won't come back.

I know of some local people that had a passion flower for a few years. I believe they lost it because they didn't mulch. I seen a variety in a catalog last year that was hardy to my zone, but will have to see if it is even available anymore.

Why don't you just lift it and winter it over inside? I do that with mine and they'll bloom throughout the winter with proper lighting. A Lady Margaret shouldn't be too expensive. It's a common variety. If you paid an exorbitant amount I'd take it back just for that reason and buy one somewhere else.

I've got 6 passionflowers in pots that I move in and out of the house each year. I've also got 1 that has become established (incarnata) outside and has returned for the past 3 years (really late this year though).

I'm trying another one outside in the ground this year and hoping to get it to establish and return year after year.

As a general rule, the red passionflowers are less hardy than others, though. My Vitifolia (another red) looks great blooming in the winter, though it is in a south facing window.
