suitable containers ?

Hi - I've never had success growing peppers here directly in our soil, which I believe never gets quite warm enough. The plants don't bloom until too late in the season, no matter what variety I grow. I am going to try a few in containers in the 2007 growing season. This morning, I came across a couple of old, rusty graniteware canning kettles which I no longer use. They are 9 inches deep & 14 inches in diameter. I can easily punch some drainage holes in their rusty bottoms. Are these deep enough ? While the black metal exterior get TOO hot ? I would plan on one pepper plant per pot. Thanks !
