Iris questions

Okay, folks.

It's apparently okay in zone 7 to dig and divide iris now.

While driving about town yesterday, I noticed a spanking new, nicely laid out iris bed.

Because I have dug and divided iris before, I don't really need any advice on the process itself.

However, I do have a couple of questions for all of you iris lovers in zone 7:

My elderly neighbor, who recently moved into an assisted iving center, always cut back her iris about this time of year, even if she wasn't going to divide them.

Her iris looked kind of puny for a few months but always bounced back.

I haven't cut mine back except to divide them in the past several years.

But I've noticed that they tend to get yuchy leaves when they get a little damp, so have been cleaning up the beds every week, just popping off leaves as they brown, to try to keep them from getting too damp and having icky leaves.

How many of you cut back your iris each summer, whether or not you are dividing?

Do you cut back all of your iris or only the bearded variety?

How often do you divide?

I have bearded, Siberian and Louisana iris and don't know if I should treat them all the same or vary what I do with them and when.
