Unknown Plumie: It keeps growing and it's got red leaves

Hello All:

My wife stuck this in the ground about five years ago and since then it's grown and grown- no matter how much I hack at it, it just keeps getting bigger. There's been some inflos on it but they never progress to blooms- they usually just form and then either fall off or just go dormant.

Can anybody identify this from just the way it's formed or from the leaves? Could you give me a clue as to what kind of blooms I might someday expect? Any advice on how to make it bloom?

My info: I live five blocks from the beach in south San Diego, California- the plant's in my front yard and gets sun most of the day.

Also- if anybody lives nearby and would like a clipping I've got a bunch that I just hacked off... like I said the thing just keeps growing!

    Miracle gro high phosphorus is very hard on long range soil health and can have harsh effects on plumeria growth after several years unless you completely recondition your soil every couple of years. Plants often act like drug addicts when taken off of it and there are many articles explaining why. Bill

    Paddlesurfer (I SUP myself)- You really cannot actually tell a plumeria from a picture because of the high gene count. You can see some variations in leaves and growth patterns but you have narrowed it down to hundreds of varieties. The best you can do is look at a flower and recognize that it is or is related to a variety. You cannot be sure without a true parent. I can show you flowers that look identical but are from vastly different parents. Anyone who looks at a flower an says it is an xyz is incorrect, period. It appears to be or it probably is but it is always a guess without the parent. This is one of the most common errors made in the plumeria world and it leads to buying an xyz and then when it flowers you realize it was something slightly less. Bill
