Engineered hardwood in kitchens?

We really like the aesthetic of hardwood flooring in the kitchen, but have concerns about how well it will hold up under "normal" conditions (e.g. a spill from time to time, dropped glass, etc)

I personally think hardwood is the best choice for kitchens. Tile can be cold and hard on your legs and back if you really use the kitchen. Under normal conditions site finished hardwood will hold up and can be refinished multiple times. There is also a process called screening that can be used to just refinish the top coats if scratches become obvious.

The white oak floors in my kitchen are 90 years old and going strong. I've had hardwood floors in the kitchens of every house I've lived in for the last 35 years and never had a problem.

Tim as long as the floor is sealed properly on site then it wont be a problem. If you are going to use a prefinished product that is not site finished it will have cracks between the planks on all 4 corners. You can use an engineered product just make sure it is one that you can have finished on site. Joel@eutree.com www.eutree.com

We are going with a home builder and I believe our only option is engineered hardwood. I'll ask if it can be finished on site.

It should hold up well if installed and finished correctly. Also remember, a scratch on real hardwood is much less obvious than a scratch/dent in a faux/laminate product... easier to fix in my option also with a little sanding/finishing... just another advantage of real wood.

Hardwood is the way to go, even if you need to sand them down and re stain later down the road. consider a border of stone around the perimeter.

We put engineered hardwood in our kitchen and whole house. It is holding up great! We built on a slab, so no option for regular hardwood floors, but my sister has regular hardwood.. oak...in her kitchen and no problems either.

very good suggestions. we just provided another wide plank black walnut floor for a client and they installed it throughout their home including their kitchen.
