Florida Newbe cries uncle

One of my best freinds retired down to Vero Beach back in January. He loves the warm weather but he and his wife cried uncle and decided to make a last second holiday visit. We have talked just about every other day and the forcast for him is always 91-77 (with humidity) lately. When he and his wife walked out of Metro Airpot yesterday it was 69 here (at 2:00 in ther afternoon). They were happy campers. I would still take a Florida summer over a Michigan winter but I thought it was ironic.

They will get used to it in time most likely. The winters here are the best in the continental US in my opinion because the temps are usually in the 70s during the day.

Winters are fabulous--it's the summers that are problematical to put it politely. Oh well, there should always be something to complain about!:)

I would trade that in for cold winters ANY day. Surely they had somewhat of an idea before they went down there??

I'm afraid I have to side with your friends Andy. Though I like being able to grow what I grow here in Central Florida, for personal comfort, I would much rather put on winter attire and experience an "up-north" winter than sweat it out in one of Florida's unending, miserable summers.

I really like floridas summer weather and I just dont feel like Im in florida without it! The winters are really nice in Florida. I went in November and the nights were actually pretty chilly in Central Florida but the days were in the mid 70s. I think Florida really is why I love palm trees and tropical plants so much. Its also the reason why I love the weather. The fact that it pours so much every day always facinates me. The closest Ive ever been to lightning was in Florida (It must have been less than 100 feet away!). The weather can get a little oppressive in Florida during the summer but an airconditioned room or maybe a patio shaded by palm trees always make it better!
I think the state with the most pleasant weather has to be Hawaii. If you ever feel its too warm then climb up a few hundred feet. Thanks to the huge mountains Hawaii has a record low of 12F which is pretty bitter. At sea level it never goes below 50F and 55F is the record low in many hawaiann cities (Key west is the closest you can get to that on the mainland USA with a record low of,I think, 42F).
    Good luck!

Small distances in Florida can make for some big weather and climate differences. Not only is there a difference between Southern and Central Florida, but even within Southern Florida there can be distinct differences. In my frequent drives between Boca Raton and Miami, I would inevitably find Boca to be hot and sunny in high summer. Continue driving south and the skies begin to fill in with thunderheads. By the time we would get to Miami and points south, it would be pouring and much cooler. This happened repeatedly. Not sure if this is the result of converging winds off the Atlantic and Gulf in the southern tip, or urban heat island from sprawling Metro Miami but the weather and vegetation seemed distinctly more tropical from Miami on south. I do miss those dramatic south Florida skies. Look around you and you have a panoramic 360 degree view of thunderstorms in various stages of development and decline (everything is FLAT down there remember--except YOU so lightening is a serious threat). Summer weather in the rest of Florida seemed downright predictable (sunny and hot with afternoon TS's)--not Miami, were the summer weather is so unstable, TS's and downpours occur regularly and repeatedly throughout the day and into the night in an unending cycle. You have to have a flare for the dramatic to appreciate that kind of weather (to say nothing of the hurricanes). And then there's the winters--'glorious' in a word. Geez, I sound homesick, yet Miami was always only a home away from home. My love of Miami goes a long way in explain my backyard I guess--South Beach/Key West North, and on steroids to boot. Happy Indepence Day!

Try a phoenix summer. At least in florida plants can survive. My beans and tomatoes gave up. I had to bring in the coconuts because 113 was causing browning that no amount of water can prevent. I hope to have a garden somewhere like miami someday...but phoenix is where the paycheck is. I guess mid july starts a period where short showers happen. I look forward to that. People here go to florida's beaches to cool off.

Being a former yankee, I can honestly say that no matter how hot it gets, you don't have to shovel sunshine. I don't miss shoveling/snow blowing a 300 ft. driveway with 3+ feet of snow on it at all.

Well after those inital cool days it is actually warmer here today than Vero Beach. We had our first 90 degree day and it is supposed to hit 92-93 the next couple of days and then "cool" down to the high 80s for a couple of days. 82 right now at 11:30. Lows in the low 70s for the next 4 nights or so. That is quite warm for up here. Nothing but sun too.

Low around 80. Expecting 100 today, 102 tomorrow. I wouldn't mind shoveling some snow about now--it would get me out of the house at least. Getting into moderate drought conditions in NJ now. Trachys stop growth at these temps. Keep cool!

I would trade in the winters here for the summers in FLA in a heartbeat. Like someone said, you don't have to shovel sunshine!

Most people don't believe me when I say half the time the summers in DC are worse than in most places in FLA. In FLA, especially near the coasts they almost never deal with 100+ heat. Its a cool 74 in St. Petersburg as we speak. Here in DC, at 10 till midnight its still 88F. St. Pete has been in the high 80s to very low 90s, while were sweltering in very high 90s to low 100s the past few days. Its going to be 90F in St. Pete tomorrow, and 102 or so here in DC. I pay fairly close attention to St. Pete's weather, as it is where I am looking to end up, and often in summer the daytime highs are HOTTER here in DC than they are down there, AND we have just as much humidity during summer as down there, and sometimes more.

Current NYC temp at 6:00 AM is 86 F. Just stepped outside and noticed the humidity is MUCH higher than it's been. Most of the heat this Spring and Summer has been arid to only moderately humid--things are getting juicier now.

88 right now with 50% humidity (or at least it says for my area code). It poored for about 10 minutes here a couple of hours ago so I know the humidity at my house is much higher. No breeze either. My air is running over time just to keep it 80 in the house.

79 degrees and a nice cool breeze outside tonight. Here in south central fl we always have a nice breeze at night. Beautiful weather to me. I never want to live in a freezer again.

David, Its also 79F here in NYC right now with a pretty good amount of humidity (Dew point of 72F at the moment). Tonight is actually much cooler than last night which was still at 90 at this time (lowest temperature was in the mid 80s!). I cant blame you for loving florida nights because I also do! Nothings better than going outside at night in Florida after a good rainstorm when its cooler but never chilly.

Its still 90F here and were 5 till midnight. After another record high of 102 at DCA (National Airport) and most places seeing around 105 today and a record HIGH low temp of 80F recorded there last night. (most places stayed around 85 as DCA sticks out into the river which cools it) Florida is looking quite COOL comparatively!

Im still with David though, Ill take FLA any day over living in a freezer during winter.
