Harlequin bugs love everything in the brassica family. I don't usually see more than a couple here in any given year, but this year we had dozens if not hundreds. I handpicked them endlessly and also searched for, found and then destroyed oodles of eggs. They seemed to prefer the broccoli plants to the cabbage plants, but I found them on all the brassicas in late spring.

Sigh, I didn't get these beds covered like I intended, the green cats have been eating the crap out of them, and I have seen several of these. I thought pest control would be easier in fall. At least I found my gloves. Can't bring myself to touch bugs barehanded. (I know, such a GIRL)

I'm laughing with you, Amy, not at you, because you sound just like me.

In the years when I plant a fall garden, I never seem to get a handle on it as well as I did in the spring. There still are pests, just not as many. This year has stayed so danged warm so deeply into autumn that I still see a lot more pest activity than usual for this time of the year. Last week I saw still another bunch of tiny, newly hatched grasshoppers. It is unbelievable. Usually by now the hopper population is dropping rapidly, but with new ones hatching out this year, I feel like we have about as many now as we've had all summer. The 90-degree days just encourage them, I guess.

I wear gloves. I hate handling any insect of any kind whatsoever without a glove. I keep several pairs of regular garden gloves in my garden tool bucket at all times, and I keep a box of blue, disposable nitrile medical gloves in the bucket too. I use them for things (like stink bugs) that are so stinky that I don't even want to touch them with my good gardening gloves. I have a spare pair of gardening gloves on a shelf in the laundry room, and in a bin in the mudroom. I have some in the barn. I sound glove-obsessed, and maybe I am, but my garden (and yard and pastures and woodland) is full of things that I do not want to touch. Guess I am such a GIRL as well. So be it. I am what I am, and we are what we are. That's okay.
