Something killing annual flowers!

I have a mostly sunny little border area where last year I grew annual vinca that thrived. This year I planted wax begonia and in about two months they tipped over, dead.

My local nursery said likely too much water. (The spot doesn't drain super-fast.) So I replaced them with vinca since they did so well before. Within WEEKS they are dead!

I don't see any bugs. Could there be a disease in the soil? There is a clematis in the same soil less than 2 feet away and it's doing great.

If anyone has any answers, I would so appreciate it! I am including a photo.

Thanks!!
